Ten Tough Interview Questions and Ten Great Answers

Mental fear of the unknown is often what produces the physical symptoms of nervousness. In addition to preparing yourself physically, you need to prepare yourself mentally. The best way to prepare mentally is to know what may be coming. Fear of the unknown can only exist when there is an unknown. Take the time to understand some of the standards when it comes to interviewing questions.

The following are some of the most difficult questions you will face in the course of your job interviews. Some questions may seem rather simple on the surfacesuch as Tell me about yourselfbut these questions can have a variety of answers. The more open ended the question, the wider the variation in the answers. Once you have become practiced in your interviewing skills, you will find that you can use almost any question as a launching pad for a particular topic or compelling story.

Others are classic interview questions, such as What is your greatest weakness? Questions most people answer improperly. In this case, the standard textbook answer for the greatest weakness question is to provide a veiled positive such as: I work too much. I just work and work and work. Wrong. Either you are lying or, worse yet, you are telling the truth, in which case you define working too much as a weakness and really do not want to work much at all.

The following answers are provided to give you a new perspective on how to answer tough interview questions. They are not there for you to lift from the page and insert into your next interview. They are provided for you to use as the basic structure for formulating your own answers. While the specifics of each reply may not apply to you, try to follow the basic structure of the answer from the perspective of the interviewer. Answer the questions behaviorally, with specific examples that show that clear evidence backs up what you are saying about yourself. Always provide information that shows you want to become the very best _____ for the company and that you have specifically prepared yourself to become exactly that. They want to be sold. They are waiting to be sold. Dont disappoint them!

Tell me about yourself.It seems like an easy interview question. Its open ended. I can talk about whatever I want from the birth canal forward. Right?
Wrong. What the hiring manager really wants is a quick, two- to three-minute snapshot of who you are and why youre the best candidate for this position.

So as you answer this question, talk about what youve done to prepare yourself to be the very best candidate for the position. Use an example or two to back it up. Then ask if they would like more details. If they do, keep giving them example after example of your background and experience. Always point back to an example when you have the opportunity.

Tell me about yourself does not mean tell me everything. Just tell me what makes you the best.
Why should I hire you?The easy answer is that you are the best person for the job. And dont be afraid to say so. But then back it up with what specifically differentiates you.
For example: You should hire me because Im the best person for the job. I realize that there are likely other candidates who also have the ability to do this job. Yet I bring an additional quality that makes me the best person for the job–my passion for excellence. I am passionately committed to producing truly world class results. For example . . .

Are you the best person for the job? Show it by your passionate examples.
What is your long-range objective?Make my job easy for me. Make me want to hire you.
The key is to focus on your achievable objectives and what you are doing to reach those objectives.

For example: Within five years, I would like to become the very best accountant your company has on staff. I want to work toward becoming the expert that others rely upon. And in doing so, I feel Ill be fully prepared to take on any greater responsibilities which might be presented in the long term. For example, here is what Im presently doing to prepare myself . . .

Then go on to show by your examples what you are doing to reach your goals and objectives.
How has your education prepared you for your career?This is a broad question and you need to focus on the behavioral examples in your educational background which specifically align to the required competencies for the career.
An example: My education has focused on not only the learning the fundamentals, but also on the practical application of the information learned within those classes. For example, I played a lead role in a class project where we gathered and analyzed best practice data from this industry. Let me tell you more about the results . . .

Focus on behavioral examples supporting the key competencies for the career. Then ask if they would like to hear more examples. Enhance your career opportunities by getting the training you need, find top degrees and schools near you!
Are you a team player?Almost everyone says yes to this question. But it is not just a yes/no question. You need to provide behavioral examples to back up your answer.
A sample answer: Yes, Im very much a team player. In fact, Ive had opportunities in my work, school and athletics to develop my skills as a team player. For example, on a recent project . . .

Emphasize teamwork behavioral examples and focus on your openness to diversity of backgrounds. Talk about the strength of the team above the individual. And note that this question may be used as a lead in to questions around how you handle conflict within a team, so be prepared.
Have you ever had a conflict with a boss or professor? How was it resolved?Note that if you say no, most interviewers will keep drilling deeper to find a conflict. The key is how you behaviorally reacted to conflict and what you did to resolve it.
For example: Yes, I have had conflicts in the past. Never major ones, but there have been disagreements that needed to be resolved. I’ve found that when conflict occurs, it helps to fully understand the other persons perspective, so I take time to listen to their point of view, then I seek to work out a collaborative solution. For example . . .

Focus your answer on the behavioral process for resolving the conflict and working collaboratively.
What is your greatest weakness?Most career books tell you to select a strength and present it as a weakness. Such as: I work too much. I just work and work and work. Wrong. First of all, using a strength and presenting it as a weakness is deceiving. Second, it misses the point of the question.
You should select a weakness that you have been actively working to overcome. For example: I have had trouble in the past with planning and prioritization. However, Im now taking steps to correct this. I just started using a pocket planner . . . then show them your planner and how you are using it.

Talk about a true weakness and show what you are doing to overcome it.
If I were to ask your professors to describe you, what would they say?This is a threat of reference check question. Do not wait for the interview to know the answer. Ask any prior bosses or professors in advance. And if theyre willing to provide a positive reference, ask them for a letter of recommendation.
Then you can answer the question like this:

I believe she would say I’m a very energetic person, that Im results oriented and one of the best people she has ever worked with. Actually, I know she would say that, because those are her very words. May I show you her letter of recommendation?

So be prepared in advance with your letters of recommendation.
What qualities do you feel a successful manager should have?Focus on two words: leadership and vision.
Here is a sample of how to respond: The key quality in a successful manager should be leadership–the ability to be the visionary for the people who are working under them. The person who can set the course and direction for subordinates. The highest calling of a true leader is inspiring others to reach the highest of their abilities. I’d like to tell you about a person whom I consider to be a true leader . . .

Then give an example of someone who has touched your life and how their impact has helped in your personal development.
If you had to live your life over again, what one thing would you change?Focus on a key turning point in your life or missed opportunity. Yet also tie it forward to what you are doing to still seek to make that change.
For example: Although Im overall very happy with where Im at in my life, the one aspect I likely would have changed would be focusing earlier on my chosen career. I had a great internship this past year and look forward to more experience in the field. I simply wish I would have focused here earlier. For example, I learned on my recent internshipâ€¦ â€¦then provide examples.

Stay focused on positive direction in your life and back it up with examples.

Jakarta – Indonesia’s energy resources are very large in number but have not been optimally explored. Indonesia has coal reserves of methane gas (CBM) to the 6th largest in the world.

Director General of Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry Evita Legowo said Indonesia’s current CBM reserves reached 453 trillion cubic feet (TCF) in 11 basins.

The amount of reserves that make Indonesia into the world’s number six, which has reserves of CBM. Number of occupied Russia with reserves 450-2000 TCF.

“Hopefully, in 2011, can already be generated electricity from CBM. While LNG from CBM target is reached in 2014,” Evita said as quoted by the office website on Tuesday (10/11/2011).

According to Evita is based on evaluations conducted Advanced Resources International, Inc. (ARI) in 2003, Indonesia has about 400-453 TCF of CBM reserves and ranks the 6th in the world.

Here are the results of the evaluation of ARI on CBM reserves in the world:

Russia: 450-2000 TCF
China: 700-1270 TCF
United States: 500-1500 TCF
Australia / New Zealand: 500-1000 TCF
Canada: 360-460 TCF
Indonesia: 400-453 TCF
Southern Africa: 90-220 TCF
Western Europe: 200 TCF
Ukraine: 170 TCF
Turkey: 50-110 TCF
India: 70-90 TCF
Kazakhstan: 40-60 TCF
South America / Mexico: 50 TCF
Poland: 20-50 TCF.
Indonesia most major CBM reserves located in South Sumatra for 183 TCF, TCF Barito 101.6, Kutai 80.4 TCF and 52.5 TCF of Central Sumatra.

CBM pilot project has been carried out in the Field Lemigas Rambutan in 2004. CBM cooperation contract first performed in 2008 and until September 2009, has signed 39 CBM KKS.

CBM is natural gas with a predominantly methane gas and other hydrocarbons with a slight and non-hydrocarbon gases in coal is the result of some chemical and physical processes.

CBM is the same as conventional natural gas that we know today, but the difference is associated with CBM coal as source rock and reservoir him. While natural gas as we know, although some are sourced from coal, produced from the reservoir sand, limestone and igneous rock fracture.
Another thing that distinguishes them is the manner in which mining of CBM reservoir must be engineered before the gas can be produced.

CBM is produced by coal prior to engineer (reservoir) in order to have enough space as a way out of its gas. Engineering process begins by producing water (dewatering) for the mechanics of equilibrium changes. After the pressure drops, coal gas will come out of the coal matrix.

Jakarta – Dari sekitar 20 kontraktor kontrak kerjasama (KKKS) minyak dan gas yang beroperasi di Indonesia, sebagian besar masih belum bisa mencapai target yang ditentukan dalam APBN-P 2011 bagi tiap-tiap KKKS tersebut.

Dalam bahan paparan Badan Pelaksana Kegiatan Hulu Minyak dan Gas ada rapat dengar pendapat bersama anggota Komisi VII DPR RI, Kamis lalu (9/9/2011), terdapat lebih dari 10 KKKS yang belum berhasil capai target.

Adapun dalam presentasi yang disampaikan, berikut ini adalah kinerja produksi minyak dan kondensat dari beberapa KKKS terbesar per 5 September 2011:

Realisasi: 357,68 ribu barel per hari (bph)
APBN-P: 356,82 ribu bph

Untuk total realisasi produksi minyak dan kondensat per 5 September 2011 sudah mencapai 905,21 ribu barel per hari. Angka itu tentu masih jauh dari target APBN-P 2011 untuk produksi minyak RI yang dipatok pada angka 945 ribu bph.

Sementara untuk tahun 2012, pemerintah akan mematok produksi minyak RI pada angka 950 ribu bph.

London-based BP Plc plans to start building the company’s third liquefied natural gas (LNG) train with a production capacity of 3.8 metric tons per annum (mtpa) at its Tangguh plant in Papua next year, a high-ranking official told reporters Thursday.

Upstream regulator BP Migas’s deputy chairman Hardiono said BP had informed the regulator about the plan.

“They have initiative to start building the third train next year. The train is expected to have a
production capacity of 3.8 mtpa and to be on stream by 2014,” Hardiono said.

He refused to give more details of the schedule for the construction, saying that BP Migas was still waiting for BP’s formal proposal for the project.

“The process is still quite long as they must submit a plan, including its AFP [Authorization for Expenditure],” Hardiono said.

However, BP Indonesia president William Lin said the company had not made a decision yet. “We are evaluating options for the further development and expansion of Tangguh. No decisions have been made at this time,” he said in an emailed statement.

Tangguh is a massive gas project located in the Bintuni Bay area in Papua, where total proven gas reserves amount to some 14.4 trillion cubic feet.

The Tangguh LNG plant consists of two production units, each with a production capacity of 3.8 million tons of LNG per year.

BP started the first production unit, called train 1, in February 2009 and the second one, train 2, in July 2009.

The project has long-term contracts to supply 2.6 million tons of LNG a year to the Fujian terminal in China, 1.5 million tons a year to K-Power and POSCO in South Korea, and a flexible contract to supply up to 3.7 million tons a year to Sempra’s LNG terminal in Baja California, Mexico.

Hardiono said the LNG from the third train would likely be exported to traditional markets, meaning Japan, South Korea and Taiwan, which have been the major importers for Indonesia’s LNG.

BP is the operator of the Tangguh field, holding a 37.16 percent stake in the project. Other partners are MI Berau B.V (16.3 percent), CNOOC Ltd (13.9 percent), Nippon Oil Exploration (Berau) Ltd (12.23 percent), KG Berau/KG Wiriagar (10 percent), LNG Japan Corporation (7.35 percent) and Talisman (3.06 percent).

Indonesia expects to produce 7,769 million standard cubic feet of gas (mmscfd) in 2011 or slightly higher than this year’s target of 7.758 mmscfd.

BP’s Tangguh gas field has been the fourth largest contributor to national gas production. In 2011, BP Migas expects the field to produce 879.57 mmscfd, up from this year’s target of 859,16 mmscfd.

BP is also currently operating another gas project: the Sanga-Sanga project in East Kalimantan. In this project, the company has teamed up with Italy’s ENI.

Last month, BP won exploration rights to develop the North Arafura oil and gas block in the southern part of Papua, about 400 kilometers from the Tangguh field. The company has pledged to spend US$3.4 million for exploration activities in the first three years in the newly secured block.

Jakarta - Sebanyak 14 kontraktor kontrak kerja sama (KKKS) migas di Indonesia menunjukkan produksi gas yang menggembirakan. Produksi gas 14 KKKS ini telah melampaui target APBN-P 2011.

Dalam keterangan Badan Pelaksana Kegiatan Hulu Minyak dan Gas (BP Migas) dikatakan, perusahaan migas yang telah melampaui target lifting gas tertinggi adalah ExxonMobil Oil Indonesia dengan produksi hingga 417 juta kaki kubik per hari (mmscfd). Ini lebih tinggi 89,18 mmscd dari target yang ditetapkan dalam APBN-P 2011.

Selain itu, Chevron Indonesia Company juga telah mencapai lifting gas hingga 141 mmscfd. Lebih tinggi 53,58 mmscfd dari target APBN-P 2011 sebesar 87 mmscfd.

Kemudian, posisi ketiga ditempati oleh Premier Oil Natuna Sea B.V dengan lifting gas mencapai 145 mmscfd. Lebih tinggi 18 mmcsfd dari target sebesar 126 mmcfd.

Sementara lifting gas Santos (Madura Offshore) Pty. Ltd mencapai 119 juta kaki kubik per hari, lebih tinggi 16,87 juta kaki kubik per hari dibandingkan target dalam APBNP-2011.

Kemudian PHE-West Madura Offshore mencapai lifting gas hingga 157 mmscfd. Lebih tinggi 8,03 mmscfd jika dibandingkan dengan target pada APBN-P 2011 sebesar 149 mmscfd.

Menanggapi hal tersebut, Deputi Operasi BP Migas, Rubi Rubiandini berharap 14 KKS yang telah melampaui target APBN-P 2011 dapat menjadi contoh bagi KKKS lainnya supaya meningkatkan produksi maupun lifting gasnya.

“Semua unsur pemerintah maupun KKKS harus bekerja keras bersama-sama untuk dapat terus meningkatkan produksi dan lifting gas nasional sesuai target yang telah ditetapkan,” katanya di Jakarta, Selasa (13/9/2011).

KKKS lainnya yang lifting gasnya telah melampui target adalah Energy Equity EPIC (Sengkang) Pty. Ltd., Kalila (Bentu) Operator Pty. Ltd., Triangle (Pase), JOB-PetroChina East Java, JOB P-Costa Int. Group Ltd, PHE-ONWJ, Medco E&P Ind. (S&C Sumatra), Kangean Energy Ind. Ltd., PetroChina Int. (Bermuda) Ltd.

Pada tanggal 1 dan 2 Oktober 2008, adalah Hari Raya Idul Fitri 1 Syawal
1428H. Perusahaan akan memberikan Tunjangan Hari Raya Keagamaan (THR) tahun 2008
kepada pekerja dengan ketentuan sebagai berikut:

1. Tunjangan Hari Raya Keagamaan tahun2008 diberikan sesuai Keputusan
Pemerintah (Per.Men. No.Per.04/Men/94). Sesuai Pasal 4 ayat 2, THR dibayarkan
selambat lambatnya 7 hari sebelum Hari Raya.

Perhitungan masa kerja untuk memperoleh THR tahun 2007 (1428H) yaitu sampai
dengan tanggal 12 Oktober 2007.

2. Perhitungan THR :
a. Pekerja dengan masa kerja kurang dari 3 bulan, tidak mendapat THR
(mulai masuk kerja setelah tanggal 13 Juli 2007).
b. Pekerja dengan masa kerja 3 bulan atau lebih tetapi masih kurang dari
4 bulan mendapat THR sebesar 25% dari Gaji Pokok (mulai masuk kerja antara
tanggal 14 Juni s/d 13 Juli 2007).
c. Pekerja dengan masa kerja 4 bulan atau lebih tetapi masih kurang dari
5 bulan mendapat THR sebesar 33% dari Gaji Pokok (mulai masuk kerja antara
tanggal 14 Mei s/d 13 Juni 2007).
d. Pekerja dengan masa kerja 5 bulan atau lebih tetapi masih kurang dari
6 bulan mendapat THR sebesar 42% dari Gaji Pokok (mulai masuk kerja antara
tanggal 14 April s/d 13 Mei 2007).

Mataram – PT Newmont Nusa Tenggara (NNT) bakal mulai mengeksplorasi cadangan emas dan tembaga lokasi tambang baru yang mereka sebut Blok Elang, di Kabupaten Sumbawa, NTB, September mendatang. Di lokasi itu, saat ini, pekerja NNT tengah menyelesaikan konstruksi camp.

“Kami saat ini sedang menyelesaikan pembuatan camp. Kalau sesuai rencana, pengeboran akan kami mulai bulan September,” kata Kepala Departemen Komunikasi NNT Rubi Purnomo, di Mataram, Kamis (11/8/2011).

Eksplorasi ini kata Rubi adalah eksplorasi lanjutan. Eksplorasi sebetulnya telah dilakukan Newmont sejak tahun 1990. Namun eksplorasi terhenti pada 2005, menyusul camp eksplorasi milik Newmont dibakar warga setempat pada Maret 2005.

Newmont baru bisa melanjutkan eksplorasi setelah mengantongi izin dari Pemerintah Indonesia November 2010. Izin itu mencakup eksplorasi di kawasan hutan seluas 25.000 hektar, yang disebut masyarakat Sumbawa Hutan Dodo Rinti. Newmont direstui pemerintah mengekplorasi kawasan hutan itu dengan jangka waktu 20 tahun.

Kawasan yang dieksplorasi itu masih dalam kawasan 87.000 hektar hutan yang termasuk dalam Kontrak Karya (KK) yang diperoleh Newmont dari Pemerintah Indonesia tahun 1986.

Rubi belum bisa memastikan berapa lubang lagi yang akan dibor, sebelum mereka memastikan tambang baru ini ekonomis untuk dieksploitasi cadangan emas, tembaga dan mineral ikutannya.

Saat ini di sana, dari eksplorasi sebelumnya telah ada 116 lubang dengan jarak masing-masing 200 meter. Newmont kata Rubi akan mengebor lubang lebih dekat, setidaknya satu lubang berjarak 50 sampai 75 meter.

Sementara itu Media Relation NNT Ruslan Ahmad yang mendampingi Rubi menambahkan, pengeboran akan dilakukan vertikal dan horizontal.

“Berapa persis jumlahnya, masih dalam pematangan teknis,” kata Ruslan.

Lokasi eksplorasi ini berjarak puluhan kilometer arah timur kawasan tambang Batu Hijau, Kabupaten Sumbawa Barat, tempat Newmont mengoperasikan tambang saat ini.

Kalau berkaca pada pengalaman eksplorasi Tambang Batu Hijau, Newmont butuh waktu tujuh tahun untuk eksplorasi dan memastikan cadangannya ekonomis untuk ditambang. Setelah itu, Newmont juga membutuhkan waktu untuk membuat studi kelayakan dan juga membangun konstruksi sebelum memulai eksploitasi.

Sejauh ini, dari hasil ekplorasi sebelumnya, Newmont menemukan potensi cadangan emas dan tembaga di Blok Elang lebih besar dibanding potensi cadangan emas dan tembaga di Batu Hijau.

Potensi cadangan batu hijau adalah 19 juta troy ounce emas dan 18 miliar pound tembaga. Satu troy ounce emas setara 31,103 gram, dan satu pound setara 0,5 kilogram.

INILAH.COM, Jakarta – Pengembangan gas bumi mendominasi 10 proyek terbesar yang tengah ditangani Badan Pelaksana Kegiatan Usaha Hulu Minyak dan Gas Bumi (BPMIGAS).

Kepala Divisi Humas, Sekuriti, dan Formalitas, BPMIGAS, Gde Pradnyana mengatakan, investasi 10 proyek tersebut mencapai US$ 4,725 miliar dengan kapasitas disain produksi sebesar 1.750 juta kaki kubik gas bumi per hari, 26.000 kondensat per hari, dan 20.000 minyak per hari. “Rentang produksi pertama antara tahun 2011 hingga 2014,” kata Gde dalam siaran persnya di Jakarta, Selasa (9/8).

Dia menjelaskan, proyek-proyek tersebut di luar proyek pengembangan lapangan Banyu Urip, Blok Cepu, yang nilai investasinya diperkirakan mencapai US$ 1,3 miliar. Ditargetkan, pada tahun 2014, produksi minyak blok tersebut mencapai 165 ribu barel per hari.

Gde mengatakan, dari 10 proyek itu, hanya ada satu proyek minyak bumi, yakni Ujung Pangkah Development dengan operator Hess Indonesia, dengan kapasitas disain produksi sebesar 20.000 barel minyak per hari dan 150 juta kaki kubik gas bumi per hari. Sisanya adalah proyek gas. Antara lain, Terang Sirasun Batur (TSB) dengan operator Kangean Energy yang kapasitas disain produksi sebesar 300 juta kaki kubik per hari pada kuartal kedua 2012, serta proyek Sisi Nubi 2B – New Platform dengan operator Total E&P Indonesie dengan kapasitas disain 350 juta kaki kubik pada kuartal kedua 2013.

Menurutnya, peningkatan produksi minyak yang cukup besar seperti di proyek Banyu Urip kemungkinan besar belum akan terulang dalam lima tahun ke depan. Hal ini mengingat selama 10 tahun terakhir belum ditemukan cadangan minyak dalam skala besar. Tidak hanya tahap pengembangan, dalam kegiatan eksplorasi, cadangan besar yang berhasil diketemukan umumnya cadangan gas. Misalnya, proyek Masela di Laut Arafura dengan operator Inpex, kemudian Genting Oil di Blok Kasuri, Papua Barat, dan Blok Natuna Timur, di Kepulauan Riau. “Kondisi ini menggambarkan masa depan produksi migas di Indonesia didominasi gas bumi,” kata dia.

Ditegaskan, peningkatan produksi gas tersebut diprioritaskan untuk kebutuhan domestik, tanpa mengesampingkan ekspor untuk penerimaan negara. Sebut saja proyek lapangan Ruby dengan operator Pearl Oil Sebuku yang gasnya telah dialokasikan untuk pabrik pupuk Kalimantan Timur (PKT) V. Begitu pula dengan TSB dan Ujung Pangkah yang produksi gas seluruhnya untuk kebutuhan listrik dan industri di Jawa Timur.

Hanya saja, dia mengingatkan, konsumen domestik untuk memperhatikan kelayakan harga agar proyek gas tersebut dapat berjalan. “Dengan kondisi saat ini, harga di bawah US$ 3 per kaki kubik gas sulit dipertahankan karena tidak memungkinkan pengembangan lapangan dapat dilaksanakan,” katanya.
